How To Prepare a Safe Haven: Puppy Proofing!

How to create a home where your Corgi can thrive!

Bringing a puppy home is like bringing home a toddler. They're curious, energetic, and determined to explore every corner—and everything goes in their mouth.

Start Low

Your Corgi is low to the ground. Get down on their level and look around. What do you see? Cords to chew? Small objects to swallow? Gaps under furniture where they could get stuck? Anything at puppy height is fair game.

Protect Your Belongings

Cardigans are smart and persistent. They'll chew shoes, furniture legs, and baseboards. Provide plenty of safe chew toys and redirect them consistently.

Secure the Kitchen

Keep all food out of reach—Corgis are food-motivated and will counter-surf if they can. Trash cans need secure lids. Cleaning products, medications, and chocolate should be safely stored away.

Check Your Plants

Many common houseplants are toxic to dogs. Research every plant in your home and remove or relocate any that are dangerous.

Create a Safe Space

Your puppy needs a place where they can retreat and feel secure. A crate, a playpen, or a quiet corner with a bed works beautifully. The crate should be just big enough for them to stand, turn around, and lie down—a crate the size of a bedroom teaches a puppy to potty in one corner.

Think About Long-Term Safety

Corgis can jump higher than you'd expect. Keep stairs gated if you're worried about their backs. Secure heavy furniture that could tip. Cover electrical outlets.

Prepare for Emergencies

Know your nearest emergency vet. Save their number in your phone. Create a first aid kit for your puppy.
