How to Nurture a Corgi’s Natural Gifts

Cardigan Welsh Corgis are brilliant. It's one of the reasons we love them. But that intelligence comes with a responsibility—if you don't give them something to think about, they'll find their own entertainment. And trust me, you might not like what they come up with.
Enrichment isn't just about keeping your dog busy. It's about nurturing the gifts within them. It's about helping them become everything they were created to be.
Why Enrichment Matters
Your Corgi was bred to work, to think independently, solve problems, and make decisions while herding cattle. That drive doesn't disappear when they come home. Without mental stimulation, Corgis can become bored, anxious, and even destructive.
Enrichment builds confidence. A dog who learns to solve problems becomes a dog who faces new challenges with curiosity rather than fear.
Simple Enrichment Ideas
Puzzle toys: Snuffle mats, treat-dispensing balls, and puzzle boards are wonderful for engaging their minds.
Scent work: Hide treats around the house and let your Corgi use that incredible nose to find them. This taps into their natural abilities.
Training sessions: Short, positive sessions (5-10 minutes) several times a day. Cardigans love to learn, and training builds your bond.
New experiences: Take them to new places, let them walk on different surfaces, introduce them to new sounds.
Herding games: A flirt pole kept low to the ground satisfies that herding instinct without needing livestock.
The Overtired Puppy
A puppy who suddenly goes wild, bites hard, and cannot hear you is not being bad. They are exhausted. Put them in the crate for a nap. Nine times out of ten the problem was sleep. Puppies need 18 to 20 hours of sleep a day. Enrichment should be balanced with plenty of rest.
