Cardigan Welsh Corgi History
Discover one of the oldest dog breeds in the British Isles, why we believe the Cardigan Welsh Corgi is one of the world's most remarkable family companions and how aligned this beautiful breed is with our Faith-Filled Breeders™ program.
Born to work beside a family.
The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is one of the oldest continuously existing breeds in the world, with roots stretching back nearly 3,000 years to the Celtic tribes who brought them to Wales. Despite their short legs, Cardigans were fearless cattle drovers — darting in to nip at heels, then ducking clear of the kick.

But unlike breeds built for one job, the Cardigan did a little of everything: herding the cattle, guarding the homestead, keeping watch over the children, and holding down the hearth at day's end. For thousands of years they weren't simply pets — they were trusted partners and beloved members of the family. That versatility is still the breed's personality today.

A Perfect Match
Why corgis are perfect for Faith-Filled Breeders™
Bred for purpose from the beginning
For a thousand years, every corgi had both a job and a family. Purpose isn't something we invented for this breed — it's their entire history.
Gifts for every pathway
Herding instinct, problem-solving, devotion, and a comforting nature — corgi gifts map naturally to every Purpose Pathway™, from farm work to therapy visits.
A blessing-sized package
Loyal, funny, sturdy, and brilliant — a big dog's heart on short legs, made to be someone's greatest blessing for a lifetime.

One name. Two different breeds.
The Cardigan Welsh Corgi and the Pembroke Welsh Corgi share Welsh roots and a similar silhouette, but they're two entirely separate breeds — officially recognized apart in 1934, with histories that had already diverged for centuries. At DnD Corgis, we proudly specialize in the Cardigan.

Why we fell in love with the Cardigan.
After years of raising corgis, we chose to focus exclusively on the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. We love their expressive tails, incredible intelligence, beautiful variety of colors, and gentle confidence — athletic enough for a full day outdoors, calm enough to spend the evening curled up beside the people they love. Most of all, like all corgis,
we love their deep devotion to family.

Because for us, breeding Cardigans isn't simply about raising puppies. It's about preserving one of the world's oldest working breeds and helping them keep doing what they've always done best: loving people.
