The First Gift You'll Ever Give Your Puppy

One of my favorite moments is hearing from a family after they've met their puppy and finally chosen a name. Sometimes they've known the name for months before their puppy was even born. Other times they spend a few days together, getting to know one another before they say, "That's it...this is who you are."

I love those conversations because every name has a story. Some are inspired by a favorite place, a childhood memory, a beloved family member, a hobby, or even a favorite snack. Others are chosen simply because they make everyone smile. No matter where the inspiration comes from, your puppy's name becomes one of the very first gifts you'll ever give them. Long after puppyhood has passed, it will become part of thousands of memories you'll make together.

Over the years, you'll say your dog's name more times than you could ever count. You'll call them in from the backyard, cheer them on during training, whisper it while they nap beside you, laugh as they zoom through the house with their favorite toy, and call them when it's time for dinner. Years from now, you'll probably find yourself smiling as you tell stories about all the adventures you shared together. Their name becomes woven into everyday life, which is why choosing it is about so much more than filling out paperwork or ordering a personalized collar. It's the beginning of your story together.

One piece of advice I often share with new families is not to feel like you have to decide right away. Some puppies tell you exactly who they are the moment you meet them. Others take a little longer. You may arrive thinking your puppy is going to be "Charlie," only to discover after a few days together that "Scout" somehow fits them perfectly. That's one of the wonderful things about puppies. As their personalities begin to shine, the right name often follows naturally. There's no rush. Enjoy getting to know your new best friend.

If you're still looking for inspiration, think about the things that matter most to you. Some families choose names inspired by nature like Willow, River, Aspen, Maple, Clover, or Sage. Others are inspired by favorite books, meaningful places, family traditions, seasons, flowers, colors, hobbies, or qualities they admire like Joy, Brave, Sunny, Hope, or Scout. We've even met puppies named after favorite foods, travel destinations, and family jokes that have been passed down for generations. The best names aren't necessarily the most unique—they're the ones that make you smile every time you say them.

While there are no rules, there are a few things we've learned over the years. Shorter names—usually one or two syllables—are often easiest for puppies to recognize and easiest for families to use consistently during training. It's also helpful to avoid names that sound very similar to common commands like Sit, Stay, or No, as that can sometimes create confusion during those early learning stages. Most importantly, choose a name you'll still love years from now. Trends come and go, but your dog's name becomes part of your family's story.

Long before your puppy understands the meaning behind their name, they'll begin learning something even more important. Every time they hear it, they'll connect it with good things—love, encouragement, playtime, dinner, gentle hands, familiar voices, and the comfort of home. That's why we encourage families to use their puppy's name with kindness and positivity, especially during those first few weeks together. It builds trust and creates a wonderful foundation for training and communication.
