Questions Every Family Should Ask Before Bringing Home a Puppy

One of the questions I hear most often is, "What should I look for in a breeder?"

I always smile because it tells me someone is doing their homework—and that's exactly what I hope every future puppy owner will do. Bringing home a puppy is a decision that will shape your family's life for the next 12 to 15 years. While it's easy to fall in love with adorable puppy photos, one of the most important decisions you'll make isn't choosing your puppy—it's choosing the person who raises them during those very first weeks of life. Those early weeks matter more than many people realize.

A responsible breeder isn't simply raising puppies. They're helping shape confident, healthy companions while preserving and protecting the future of the breed they love.

Whether your puppy comes from DnD Corgis or another breeder, these are the questions I encourage every family to ask.

Ask How the Puppies Are Raised

A puppy's world begins long before they ever come home.

Ask where the puppies are raised and what their days look like. Are they part of everyday family life? Do they experience normal household sounds, visitors, children, different surfaces, and gentle handling?

Those little experiences become the building blocks of confidence.

At DnD Corgis, our puppies are raised in our home because we want them to grow up experiencing the same kinds of sights, sounds, and routines they'll encounter with their future families. Every new experience is introduced thoughtfully, helping each puppy develop curiosity instead of fear.

Ask About Socialization

Socialization is much more than simply meeting new people.

It's helping puppies safely experience the world while they're young enough to build confidence from those experiences. That might include exploring different textures, hearing new sounds, solving simple challenges, meeting kind people, or learning that new experiences can be exciting instead of scary. We incorporate Puppy Culture principles and age-appropriate enrichment because we believe those first eight weeks lay an important foundation for the rest of a puppy's life. No program can replace the love and training a family provides after Go Home Day, but we can give every puppy a wonderful place to begin.

Ask About Health

A responsible breeder should be happy to talk with you about the health of their breeding dogs. Health testing isn't just about paperwork. It's one of the many ways breeders work to make thoughtful decisions that benefit future generations of the breed. Don't be afraid to ask questions. A breeder who truly loves their dogs will usually enjoy explaining why they do what they do.

Ask If They Know Their Puppies

One of my favorite parts of raising puppies is watching their personalities unfold.

By the time our puppies are ready to go home, we know who is the curious explorer, who loves to cuddle, who carefully observes before trying something new, and who is always carrying around a toy as though it's their most important job.

Every puppy is different. That's why I believe choosing a puppy should be about much more than coat color or markings.

A breeder who spends meaningful time with their puppies should be able to tell you about their personalities, confidence, play styles, and individual temperaments—not just their appearance.

Ask What Happens After Go Home Day

One of the things that surprised many of our DnD families is that bringing their puppy home wasn't the end of our relationship. It was the beginning of a new chapter.

Questions come up. Training has ups and downs. Sometimes you simply want to share a picture of your puppy's first birthday or celebrate a new milestone.

Those moments are some of my favorites. Watching our puppies grow into beloved family members is one of the greatest blessings of being a breeder, and I love staying connected with the families who welcome them home.

A Responsible Breeder Never Stops Learning

One thing I've learned over the years is that there is always more to learn.

Every litter teaches us something. Every puppy is unique. Every family has different experiences to share. Being a responsible breeder means continuing to learn, continuing to grow, and always asking how we can better prepare the next generation of puppies. It's a responsibility I never take lightly.

The answer isn't one big thing. It's hundreds of little things.

It's celebrating a puppy's first confident step onto a new surface.

It's spending extra time helping a quieter puppy build confidence.

It's introducing new experiences with patience instead of rushing the process.

It's praying over our puppies, loving them well, and remembering that we're only part of their story. While they're with us, it's our responsibility to nurture those gifts, build a strong foundation, and prepare them for the family they've been waiting for.

Choosing More Than a Puppy

When you choose a breeder, you're choosing someone who will care for your puppy before you ever meet them. You're choosing the environment where they'll take their first steps, learn their first lessons, and begin discovering the world around them.

That's a tremendous responsibility, and one we feel honored to have. Our hope is that every DnD puppy leaves our home healthy, well-socialized, confident, and ready to become a cherished member of their new family. Because at the end of the day, our goal has never been simply to raise beautiful Cardigan Welsh Corgis.
