Wonderfully Made: Anatomy of a Corgi

The unique design of your Cardigan Welsh Corgi.
"Fearfully and wonderfully made." When I look at a Cardigan Welsh Corgi, I think of that verse. Every part of them was designed with intention, shaped by centuries of purpose.
The Long Body
Cardigans are much longer than they are tall, about 1.8 times longer than their height at the shoulder. This low-to-the-ground design allowed them to herd cattle safely. When a cow kicked, the kick sailed right over the Corgi's head. That long body is a marvel of engineering but it also means we must protect their spines. Keeping them at a healthy weight, avoiding high-impact activities, and supporting their backs during handling all help protect this vulnerable area.
The Short Legs
Those stubby, slightly bowed legs are surprisingly powerful. They carry a dog that can weigh 25 to 38 pounds. The legs are slightly bowed to wrap around their chest, giving them stability and agility. Despite their short stature, Cardigans are athletic and active. They can walk for miles.
The Foxy Head
Cardigans have a head that resembles a fox: tapered muzzle, domed forehead, and those large, expressive ears. Those ears aren't just adorable, they're functional! They help them hear a calf straying from the herd from remarkable distances.
The Expressive Tail
Unlike their Pembroke cousins, Cardigans have a beautiful, fox-like brush of a tail. It's set in line with the body and carried low when standing, lifting slightly when moving. It's a constant indicator of their mood.
The Double Coat
That weatherproof coat is a gift from their Welsh heritage. The stiff outer coat and soft, dense undercoat protected them from the elements. It also means they shed—a lot. Regular brushing keeps the undercoat from matting and reduces flying fur.
The Herding Instinct
Cardigans are working dogs at heart. They're intelligent, independent, and resourceful, bred to think and act independently while driving cattle. Channel that instinct into positive activities: herding games, agility, scent work, or obedience.
Every part of your Cardigan Welsh Corgi was designed with intention. They were created for a purpose. Our job is to help them fulfill it.
